Waterborne
Every year, 17 pathogens transmitted through water cause an estimated 7.2 million cases of waterborne illness in the United States. This felted bag indicates the proportion of waterborne disease outbreaks caused by bacteria (green), parasites (blue), chemicals/toxins (red), and viruses (yellow) in New York State 1971 – 2023. Data are from the CDC’s BEAM dashboard, an interactive tool to access, visualize, and track diseases, including waterborne pathogens.
This piece was created in association with a short-term artist residency supported by the Institute for Human Health and the Environment at the University of Rochester in which we used Wool and Water to explore the connections between water and human health.
