Palace

The oldest celebration of its kind in the Eastern US and certainly the most cherished annual event among the residents of the village, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival began in 1897 as a one-day affair and now stretches over 10 days and many activities. The ice palace is an emblem of winter carnival, built on the shores of Lake Flower with ice harvested from the lake. Warming winter temperatures threaten this treasured landmark, from lack of ice with which to construct it to warm temperatures rendering it unsafe. This crochet piece is meant to represent the threat of warmer winters on this cold-dependent cultural icon.
