Drought

Increased periods of drought is one of the conditions associated with climate change in the northeastern US.  This hat represents drought observed in Monroe County, NY, using data available from the National Integrated Drought Information System. Based on the Palmer Drought Index, colors of each section represent the increasing number of weeks during which some portion of the county experienced drought conditions annually from 2001 (top of hat) – 2024 (bottom).

This piece was created in association with a short-term artist residency supported by the Institute for Human Health and the Environment at the University of Rochester in which we used Wool and Water to explore the connections between water and human health.
