Wetlands

This hooked and mixed-media piece came about organically. I was using copper piping for the first time to create a frame and it bent into the shape of a wave which I liked. I then just proceeded with that idea and added different elements that pleased me including hooking silk strips through beautiful old linen lace, attaching men’s ties (folded in half) and securing hand-spun art yarns. The hooked blue wool represents water. After the piece was essentially finished I thought about what it evoked in me. It seemed that the non-blue parts were wetland areas that butt up to open water. These areas are essential for keeping the open water clean, helping with flood control and erosion, and providing habitat for various organisms. The colors help focus this message as do the varied textures.
